Obituary for Alvin Charles Schmidt

SCHMIDT, ALVIN CHARLES, age 88, of Weidman, passed away Monday, December 31, 2018 at Medilodge of Mt. Pleasant.

A Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Monday, January 7, 2019 at St. Joseph The Worker Catholic Church in Beal City with Father Tom Held officiating. Family will receive friends at St. Joseph on Sunday, January 6, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to mass on Monday. A Prayer Vigil will be held Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. at St. Joseph. Rite of Committal will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery. A luncheon will take place at Beal City Knights of Columbus Hall immediately following burial. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph The Worker Catholic School. Envelopes will be available at the church.

Alvin was born July 6, 1930, in Beal City, the son of Francis “Frank” and Mary “Minnie” (Bogemann) Schmidt. He graduated from Beal City High School in 1949 and earned his bachelor’s degree from CMU. Alvin married Darla Harris on November 26, 1955, in Marlette, Michigan. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957. Alvin worked as a supervisor for General Motors and retired after 22 years. He was a lifelong parishioner at St. Joseph, member of Sigma Tau Gamma, and Knights of Columbus. Alvin loved to tinker, build large model planes, and woodworking. In the past, he and Darla enjoyed hosting card parties, and traveling to Florida.

Alvin is survived by his wife Darla Schmidt of Weidman; children: Michael Schmidt of New Port Richey, FL, Julie Ann Schmidt of Brandon, FL, Theresa Gracia of Valrico, FL, Karen (Pat) Jarman of Mt. Pleasant, Karl Schmidt of Mt. Pleasant, Diane (Terry) Lyon of Clare, Denice Charboneau of Mt. Pleasant, and Daniel (Vickie) Schmidt of Brandon, FL; 15 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and sister Kathleen Canel of Eden Prairie, MN.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter Mary Ann; son Stephen Schmidt; grandson Joseph Schmidt; granddaughter Jaqulyn Culp; son-in-law Leonard Charboneau; daughter-in-law Maria Piedad Quellar-Schmidt; brothers Norbert, Francis, and William; and sisters, Helen, Theresa, Mary Beth, Janet, and Martha Ann.
