Obituary for Ann Marie Keenan

Ann Marie Keenan passed away on September 6, 2021, in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan due to complications from a stroke. She was 84 years old.

Ann was born in September, 1936 in Maple Grove Township, Michigan. She graduated from St. Michael’s High School in New Lothrop and continued her education at Central Michigan University, where a mutual friend introduced Ann to Hudson Keenan. They married the day before Ann’s CMU gradation in 1958, and she was awarded her Bachelor of Science degree the next day. During the following 63 years of marriage, they welcomed 4 children, 2 grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with family and many wonderful friends, traveling, riding bicycles on rail trails and sharing numerous hobbies and activities.

Education and community engagement were extremely important to Ann; she earned two additional master’s degrees from Central Michigan University and shared her enthusiasm for science throughout her 25-year teaching career, which included positions at Farwell High School, Sacred Heart Academy, Central Michigan University and Mt. Pleasant High School, where she taught Chemistry until her retirement in 1995. Ann was active in the Mt. Pleasant Women’s City Club for over 43 years, serving as President from 1981-1983, and bestowed Honorary Membership status in 2018 for her contributions and service to the club. She particularly enjoyed her work with the club’s Music Scholarship committee, which organized an annual competition to award scholarships to local student musicians. Ann was a member of the Chippewa Valley Audubon Club for over 60 years and looked forward to participating in the annual bird counts. She was a member of the Friends of the Clarke Historical Library at Central Michigan University, and was an active parishioner at Sacred Heart Church where she served as a lector.

Ann is survived by her husband, Hudson Keenan; her children, Kieran Keenan, Kevin Keenan, Brendan Keenan, Brigid Keenan; grandchildren, Moya Gotham, Chelsea Gotham; siblings Joseph Andres, John Andres, Susan Fox, Mary Richmond and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

Due to COVID-19 health and safety considerations, there will be a private family Funeral Mass, with a public Celebration of Life for Ann to be held in the future. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please send a donation in Ann’s memory to The Mt. Pleasant Women’s City Club Music Scholarship Fund, c/o Clark Family Funeral Chapel, 114 S. Bradley Street, Mt. Pleasant, MI 48858. Envelopes will also be available at Clark Family Funeral Chapel.
