Obituary

On Wednesday, September 2, 2020, Brian Patrick Schafer, Sr, MD, husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his beloved Maple Lane cabin at the age of 61.

Senior was born on May 16, 1959 in Rosebush, MI to Gerald (Chum) and Pat Schafer. He earned his Medical Doctorate in 1988 from Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and served the community as a cardiologist for 30 years. He also dedicated 17 years of active duty service in the United States Air Force where he achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel.

On April 26, 1986, he married the love of his life, his cherished wife of 34 years, Christine Schafer, MD and together, they raised: Tiffany Schafer, Brittany (Schafer) Jones, MD and Ed Jones, DO, Brian Schafer, Jr. and Christi Schafer, Stason (Schafer) Vandegrift, MD and Drew Vandegrift and Brian Stone. Senior has 8 grandchildren: Sam Schafer, William Jones, Gracie Jones, Charlie Jones, George Jones, Brian Schafer III (Trey), Olivia Schafer and baby Vandegrift (due April 2021). Senior is also survived by his mother Patricia Schafer (Jack Hartupee) of Mt. Pleasant; brother Michael (Kiyomi) Schafer of Midland; and sisters Jill Schafer Maxwell and Jennifer Hess (Ted), both of Tucson, AZ.

Senior lived life to the fullest and his enthusiasm for life enriched the lives of everyone around him. He was a skilled musician and taught himself, then others, how to play music and fostered a love of music in others. He was a dedicated outdoorsman and steward of his treasured Michigan land. He loved and was dearly loved by his many family and friends. He is remembered as our glue, our gravity, our true compass.

Just a note to thank you for suggesting gifts to Wheatland Music Organization in Brian's memory. I chair the Scholarship committee at Wheatland made up of adult and youth volunteers. Because of generous donors like you that recognize the joy and value of music we are able to award over a dozen scholarships each year across Michigan. Thank you again. Pamela Burke

My sympathies at your tremendous loss. I met Dr. Schafer when he accepted me as a patient three years ago after I suffered a silent heart attack.
His kindness and calmness assured me on my road to recovery.
We hit it off because I have relatives who lived in Sears, MI and I knew where his happy place land was:). He shared some of his medical history with me and we had some very deep conversations that I appreciated about life and death. (The heart attack as a 50-something-just -retired -teacher scared the willies out of me).

He talked much about his beautiful family at each visit. Such a wonderful man....the last visit I had with him before he retired, I had lost a bunch of weight and my heart “looked good”.

Istood up and he looked at me and said, “Keep up the good work and you sure are tall. You were always sitting at precious visits.”
We laughed and I replied it was his wonderful docotoring that healed my heart and gave me added inches instead of shrinking as a 57 year old. From how he talked of his family, he loved deeply and was deeply loved. Again, my deepest sympathies at your great loss.

Brian and I did our medical residencies together at Wright Patterson Medical Center in Dayton, OH from 1988-1991, and during those trying days (and nights) I got to know him well. Hard working and passionate, Brian cared for his patients tenaciously and well. But the traits that I remember best were his energy, positive demeanor, and sense of humor. Doing 36 hour shifts every third night requires special survival skills, and Brian definitely had them. But he could always be counted on to encourage his compatriots with a quick quip or some sage advice. He went on to excel in Cardiology, and while I’m sure he saved many lives in that capacity, I will always remember him as a great resident who could do it all, even at 2AM.
