Obituary for Cherrye N. Watts

WATTS, DR. CHERRYE N., age 77, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Friday, June 10, 2022, at McLaren Central Michigan in Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral Services for Dr. Watts will be held on Monday, June 20, 2022, at 12 p.m. with Pastor Abraham Burton officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. A luncheon will take place at Reflections Reception Center after the burial. The family will receive friends beginning at 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 12 p.m.

Dr. Cherrye N. Watts was born on October 10, 1944, in Wayside, Mississippi to Robert and Leola Ervin. Cherrye was the 7th child out of 7 children. She was family-oriented, enjoyed her siblings, bright, smart, athletic, and enjoyed singing.

Cherrye attended Norma C. O’Bannon High School in Greenville, Mississippi. While in high school, Cherrye was in the school choir, ran track, and played volleyball and basketball. After graduating with honors in 1963, Cherrye met and married Matthew Green Sr. Born to this union was Matthew Green Jr.

Cherrye relocated to Chicago, Illinois, and work at the United States Post Office. Cherrye met and married James Scott. Born to this union was MarQuitte A. Scott. Cherrye continued to work at the Post Office for many years as a mail carrier and decided to further her education at the University of Illinois in Champaign – Urbana. Cherrye married Carlton M. Watts and born to this union was Carla Watts and Carlton M. Watts Jr.

After receiving her bachelor’s degree in education, Cherrye became a teacher in the Chicago Public School District. Cherrye worked at John Marshall High School and Hirsch High School as a Physical Education teacher. Cherrye loved teaching and mentoring her students.

Cherrye attended a church service at The Church of God as a guest of Sister Clark. Cherrye gave her heart to the Lord and repented of her sins on June 1, 1973. Cherrye was very active in several ministries; however, she was passionate about the adult choir and the young people’s choir. Cherrye served the Lord faithfully through her voice singing solos, singing at Fellowship meetings, weddings, funerals, home gatherings, and much more.

Cherrye continued her education and received her master’s degree in Counseling from Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Her love for helping others allowed her to further continue her education at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois where she earned her doctorate in Counseling. Cherrye moved back to Mt. Pleasant where she joined the Counseling department as a Professor of Counseling teaching master level students. In addition, Cherrye would travel to other locations on the weekend to teach. Cherrye continued to teach until she retired.

Dr. Cherrye N. Watts went home to be with the Lord on June 10, 2022. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton M. Watts Sr., her parents, Robert and Leola Ervin, three brothers: TJ Gibbs, Robert Ervin, and William Ervin; two sisters; Nancy Roberts and Minnie Greyer.

Dr. Cherrye N. Watts leaves to cherish her loving memories four children: Matthew Green Jr (Denise) of Toronto, Canada, MarQuitte A. Barlow (Robert) of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, Carla Boykin of Edwardsville, IL, and Carlton M. Watts Jr. of Chicago, IL. Cherrye also leaves one sister: Lettie L. Morris of St. Louis, Missouri, sister friend Edna Garner of Aurora, IL, 4 Godchildren, 13 grandchildren, 5 great-grand-children, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues, church family, and friends.
