Obituary for Constance Sue "Connie" Kushmaul (Raymer)

KUSHMAUL (RAYMER), CONSTANCE SUE, age 74, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Monday, January 29, 2023, at Woodland Hospice House.

Connie was born in Lansing, Michigan, July 4, 1949, the daughter of Richard and June (Mosher) Raymer. She married Sam Kushmaul on August 9, 1975, at Loomis Missionary Church in Loomis, Michigan. Connie graduated Lyman High School and Palm Beach Community College with her degree in dental hygiene.

Connie is survived by her husband, Samuel E. Kushmaul; son Charles Kushmaul of Midland; daughter Nicole Anne Kushmaul (significant other Steve Nelson and his children Andrew, Eulalai, and Trinity) of Venice, Florida; grandson Samuel “Sammy” Wayne Kushmaul; sister Patricia Raymer of Maitland, Florida; and nephew Jason Raymer of Florida.
Connie was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and June Raymer; and her brothers Jeff and Rick Raymer.

Connie enjoyed crafting, camping with family, and boating. She was a Florida beach bunny until her move to Michigan in 1992. Prior to moving, she owned Charlies Place in Oviedo, Florida and University Grille near UCF Campus in Orlando. Following their move to Michigan, Connie worked for Mt. Pleasant Schools. In 1997, she opened Broadway Grill in downtown Mt. Pleasant, which immediately became a popular breakfast and lunch destination. Unfortunately, doctors’ orders required her to sell in the spring of 2000. Her next venture the following fall was her own food concession trailer. She worked with Sykora Auctioneers to start and quickly expanded to local festivals, fairs, and multiple auctioneers so much so that Sam retired from the wholesale food business to begin a second trailer on the road. With help from Nancy McGuirk she worked the Isabella County Fair for 4H; this was Connie’s favorite time, working with 4-H youth and their families. She was sought out for her quality, friendliness, and generosity, always loving what she was doing. Kay Bouck got her involved in local youth softball tournaments. Her travels took her from the thumb to Scottsville and Lansing to Cheboygan.

With her son Charlie, she became involved with Alliance for Special Needs, a group of mothers with special needs children. This group sponsored a summer picnic and Christmas dinner and dance that grew in the last few years to serving over 200 guests. Connie was always working behind the scenes, never seeking recognition or limelight. She was a quiet force in the Central Michigan community.

Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Woodland Hospice. Memorial contributions may be made to Woodland Hospice, Isabella 4-H, or the charity of the donor’s choice.

A Memorial Luncheon for Connie will be held at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Saturday, February 24, 2024, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Come and celebrate Connie’s life and honor her memory with a final dog and dew.
