SMITH, CONSTANCE ELAINE, age 102, of Mt. Pleasant, compassionate lady, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, great-aunt, and friend to many, passed away Tuesday, September 20, 2016, at Green Acres of Mt. Pleasant under the care of Hometown Hospice.

Cremation has taken place. A Funeral Service celebrating Connie's life will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church on Friday, October 7, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Wayne Nicholson officiating. A Luncheon will immediately follow the service. Interment of ashes will take place at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church the day of the service from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. John's Episcopal Church Capital Campaign Fund, 206 West Maple Street, Mt. Pleasant, MI 48858. Envelopes will be available at Clark Family Funeral Chapel and St. John's Episcopal Church.

Connie was born December 2, 1913, in Nashville, MI, the daughter of Earl and May (Seward) Rothaar. She married Woodward C. Smith on April 13, 1936, in Grand Rapids, MI. He preceded her in death on April 4, 1974. Connie was a homemaker, a great mother and a constant supporter of her husband, Woody, during his career as a teacher and later as an administrator at Central Michigan University. President emeritus, Charles Anspach wrote: "Connie is a fine lady, wonderful mother, and a gracious hostess, who has been a guiding light for Woody's success throughout his career."

Connie enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading, and being with her family and friends. In the late 1950's, she worked for the Red Cross. She particularly enjoyed helping the children. She was also involved with the CMU Faculty Dames, the Boy Scouts, tourist club, and was a lifelong member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where she was a member of the Altar Guild. She will be remembered for her love of family, her caring for others, and her honesty. In her later years, the cabin on the AuSable River provided her with many precious memories. God Bless.

Connie is survived by her sons, Thomas (Ellie) Smith and Sid (Judy) Smith, both of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Christine Fransted of St. Johns, Melissa (Matt) Faye of Ft. Collins, CO, Dan (Libby) Smith of Traverse City, Staci (Andrew) Feinberg of Chicago, IL, and Steve (Jennifer) Smith of Mt. Pleasant; 12 great-grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews.

Connie was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia (Lou) Seibert, Joyce (Bob) Meade, and Helen (Jack) Bramble; nephew, Pete Seibert; and niece, Julie Hubbs.
