Obituary for Daryl James Mumford

Daryl J. Mumford, age 77, of Battle Creek, passed away Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at the Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, surrounded by his family.

Daryl is remembered as one of the most courageous, charming, kind hearted, giving, and loving father, grandfather, and brother. He did anything for anyone and never missed a round of golf on Saturday with friends.

Daryl was the senior partner of Mumford, Schubel, Norlander, Macfarlane & Barnett, PLLC., in Battle Creek, Michigan, general practice/litigation law firm. The firm was founded in 1978 when Mr. Mumford partnered with John Holmes in the practice of law.

Daryl was born in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, on May 5, 1946, and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1964. After one year at Central Michigan University, he entered the Marine Corps and served in Vietnam. His military service ended in 1968, when he received an Honorable Discharge due to wounds received in Vietnam. Daryl received the Navy Commendation with a Combat V and the Purple Heart as a result of the activity leading up to his injuries and wounds.

Daryl graduated from Michigan State University in 1971 with a B.A. in Political Science and received a Juris Doctor Degree from Wayne State University in 1974. He first worked in the Calhoun County Legal Aid Society then moved to the Calhoun County Prosecutor's Office in 1977. Then entered private practice law in 1978 and continued practicing until retiring in 2021 to care for his loving wife.

Daryl moved to Battle Creek, Michigan, with his wife of 32 years, Cynthia "Cindy", in January of 1975. They resided in the Battle Creek area ever since. His two children were interested in hockey. He took an active role in youth hockey and served as the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association Representative to the Board of Directors of the Greater Battle Creek Ice Hockey Association. The two children are now grown. The oldest child lives in Frisco, Colorado, with her son Devin, and the youngest child lives in Hickory Corners, Michigan with his wife, Crystal, and two children, Henry and Nathan.

Daryl is survived by his children, David (Crystal) Mumford, and Lesley Mumford; grandsons, Devin, Henry, and Nathan Mumford; brothers, Ed (Roxy Gruss) Mumford of Mt. Pleasant, Ronald (Debbie) Mumford of Jackson, and Mark (Kathleen) Mumford of Mt. Pleasant.

Daryl was preceded in death by his wife, Cynthia Lane (Shoens) Mumford; parents, Basil and Lillian (Flowers) Mumford; brothers, Robert Mumford and Dennis Mumford; and sister, Nancy (Mumford) Walker.
