Dina was born on March 2, 1939, in France, the daughter of Gerard and Renee (Dykstra) Waanderes. She was a child when the Nazis occupied her hometown during WWII. During the war her family took a huge risk and hid two American pilots who had been shot down over their farm. Growing up and dealing with the war taught Dina resilience and perseverance and the sense of doing right. Dina married Robaire Desormes and together they emigrated to America. One of Dina’s fondest memories is the cold trip on the ship crossing the ocean to America and the opportunities it brought to them. In 1994 Dina became a U.S. citizen. Dina and Robaire settled in Mt. Pleasant and opened Robaire’s Bakery in 1961, which is now Mt. Pleasant’s third oldest business. Their French background brought a European flair to their pastries. After her husband’s death in 1993, Dina carried on his baking traditions. She woke every morning at 3:30 a.m., seven days a week, and arrived at the shop by 4 a.m. She tirelessly worked to continue making Robaire’s a destination for all sweets including special-occasion cakes, fancy petit fours, French croissants and tasty doughnuts. Dina enjoyed her cats, feeding deer, and the beauty of flowers.

Dina is survived by her son Gerard (Margaret) Desormes of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren Rachel (Aaron Bock) Desormes of Schaumburg, IL, Jennifer Desormes of Mt. Pleasant, and Veronica (Tom) Eitniear of San Antonio, TX; siblings Roger (Peggy) Dykstra, Mary Beth (Robert) Bruce, Denise Dykstra and Madeline (Michael) Spivey; and many nieces and nephews.

Dina was preceded in death by her husband Robaire Desormes in 1993.
