Obituary for Dorothy M. VanDusen

Dorothy M. (Ahrens) VanDusen, a.k.a Aunt Dorothy, Dot, Adore, Rose, Dotty, Dashing Dot, Dotty Doo, Hot Dot, DVD, Dottess and Sweet Dorothy, 88, of Saginaw, MI, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2019 , in Mt Pleasant, MI.

Dorothy was born on November 17, 1931 in Saginaw, Michigan. She graduated in 1949, as valedictorian, from Arthur Hill High School.

From an early age, she knew she wanted to be a teacher. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with her Bachelor’s Degree and continued that level of excellence as she earned her Masters plus 30 in Education.

Dorothy made an impact on thousands of individuals due to her forty-two years of teaching in the Saginaw Public Schools. With Dorothy being full of love and young at heart; she was the perfect elementary school teacher.

Animals of all kinds gave Dorothy great joy. She was a wonderful mother to her sweet dogs: Trinket, Jigger, Sparky, and Tricks-z. Dorothy not only loved and adored real animals, she treated stuffed animals, figurines, and even anything that somewhat resembled an animal (For example; Titus the Tortoise, which was just a bolder) with love.

Dorothy enjoyed many things in life: singing in her quartet, playing piano, dining out, going to movies, going to the theater, shopping for treasures, traveling, and kaleidoscopes, (or really anything that sparkles)!

Family time was extremely important to Dorothy. It all began with her unique bond with her siblings. Whether by phone or in person, she never missed an opportunity to spend quality time with her family. Dorothy was always the last one to go to bed, due to as Dorothy would always put it, her “FOMO” (Fear of Missing Out).

Dorothy met friends everywhere she went. She had the innate ability to make everyone feel like they were special, and that is because she truly loved everyone unconditionally and whole-heartedly.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Marion and Alfred Ahrens and dear siblings; Jessie May Simmons and John Ahrens Sr.

Blessed with an amazing capacity to love, Dorothy is survived by countless family and friends.

As was Dorothy’s request, we will be having a small family gathering to celebrate her life. If you would like to honor Dorothy, please donate to your local Animal Shelter or perform an act of kindness.

Dorothy was truly one of a kind! She made the world a better place!
