Obituary for Dorothy VanHorn
Dorothy VanHorn (Bassett) went home to reap her heavenly reward on September 9, 2020. Dorothy was born in Breckenridge, Michigan on July 20, 1944 to Joseph and Genevieve (Glinke) Bassett. Even though Dorothy worked at a few different places, most of her life was spent being a homemaker and raising her seven children and even helping care for her grandchildren. Dorothy was a member of the Mt Pleasant Branch of the Church of the Latter Day Saints where she found great joy in worshiping the Lord alongside what she describes as “some of the best people you will ever meet”. Dorothy was married for a period to Raymond Wayne VanHorn Sr. and they share five children together (Raymond Jr., Jason, Charlene, Skip, and Cindy). Dorothy went on to have two more children James Creguer and Samuel VanHorn.
Dorothy was a woman of many traits and those who knew her are guaranteed to be able to share a story or two about her. One example of this was her creativity. Dorothy loved to play board and card games with family and friends. While playing these games her competitors would have to be on their toes to make sure they were well versed with “house rules” because if not, they were at risk of letting Dorothy win! She also used her creativity when she wanted to get out of trouble without actually “telling a fib” or hurting somebody’s feelings. Dorothy was also the primary caretaker of her brother Norman. One would be hard pressed to find either one of them without the other. Granted, they would squabble enough to drive each other batty, however they also were each other’s best friend! There are other traits that Dorothy owned, but the ones that stand out the most is that Dorothy was known for her fierce love of her family and for her Heavenly Father. All that knew her were subjected to stories of her family and if you were lucky enough you might even get to see a picture! Her love of the Lord was evident by her testimony. It was her driving passion to make sure that as many people as she could connect with knew about the Lord. Her key tag line was “Always remember that Jesus Loves you”.
Dorothy is survived by her brothers Kenneth Bassett and Norman Bassett. She is also survived by her children Raymond Jr. (Stacy) VanHorn, Jason VanHorn, Charlene (Matthew) Dengler, Skip VanHorn, Cindy (Alvin) Higbee, James (Bree) Creguer, and Samuel (Kimberly) VanHorn. She is also survived by her grandchildren Cassie Sebenick, Tara VanHorn, Phillip VanHorn, Chase VanHorn, Owen VanHorn, Joseph VanHorn, Brittany VanHorn, Joshua Davis, Jacob Davis, Jack Davis, Zac Montague, Alyssa Dengler, Tristan Dengler, Ashly (Nate) Fishburn, Kourtney Collin, Gabe Creguer, Lucas Creguer, Alexia Creguer, Alexander VanHorn, Seth VanHorn, Eric VanHorn, and Michelle VanHorn and many great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Ruthann Frasle, and brother Wesley Bassette.
Per Dorothy’s wishes there will be a graveside service at Chippewa Township Cemetery Saturday September 12, 2020 at 1p.m where family and close friends are invited to join. The service will be officiated by Bishop Jonathon Russell.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions please be made to the family to assist in Dorothy’s final expenses.
