ROUMAN, GEORGE, age 89, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2022, at McLaren Bay Region Hospital.

Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, March 23, at 11 a.m. at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 3109 Scio Church Rd., Ann Arbor, Michigan 48103, with Fr. Nicolaos Kotsis and Fr. Timothy Cook officiating. A luncheon will immediately follow at the church. Interment will take place at Bethlehem Cemetery of Ann Arbor. The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, March 21, at Clark Family Funeral Chapel in Mt. Pleasant. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Saginaw, MI; Kiwanis Club of Mt. Pleasant; or the George and Frances P. Rouman Mental Health Education Scholarship Fund through the Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation. Envelopes will also be available at the funeral chapel.

The son of Greek immigrants, George was born November 20, 1932, in Escanaba, MI, to Sam and Helen (Keriazakos) Rouman. After graduating from Escanaba High School with the class of 1950, George was appointed to the Coast Guard Academy on a full engineering scholarship. He attended for three semesters before his dad's unexpected passing, and then returned to Escanaba to help run his family's candy shop. He received his bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Michigan (Go Blue!), then served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958. George obtained his master's degree in social work from Michigan in 1960, fulfilling a calling he found early in life. George met his future bride, Frances Chronis, at his best friend's wedding in 1958; she was the maid of honor, he was the best man. They married on October 1, 1961, in Ann Arbor and celebrated their 60th anniversary last year.

George was the executive director of Community Mental Health for Central Michigan for 40 years, continually developing and expanding programs for those in need; in recognition of his dedication, the Isabella County location was renamed The George Rouman Center upon his retirement in 2005. A resident of Mt. Pleasant since 1965 who was deeply devoted to his community, George humbly accepted the Mt. Pleasant Citizen of the Year Award in 2013 recognizing his decades of service to multiple local organizations, including Kiwanis, Art Reach and the John H. Goodrow Fund.

A lifelong learner passionate about education, George was rarely without a cup of coffee and a good book. The most important thing in his life was his family, and he is survived by his wife, Frances Rouman; sons Sam (Georgia) Rouman of Edina, MN, Steve (Liz) Rouman of San Rafael, CA, Michael (Cindy) Rouman of Saline, MI, and Christopher (Marcie) Rouman of Seattle, WA; and grandchildren Sophia, George, Kate, Johnny, Alex, Teddy, Nicholas and Zachary. George was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ted and sister Tina.
