Obituary for Gerald Dean "Big Jer" Slater

SLATER, GERALD DEAN "BIG JER", age 67, of Mt. Pleasant passed away Monday, April 19, 2021, at MediLodge of Mt. Pleasant.

A Public Visitation for Gerald will take place on Thursday, April 22, 2021 from 4 until 8 p.m. at Clark Family Funeral Chapel. Private Funeral Services for Gerald will take place. Those not in attendance are invited to join the service via a live broadcast on Friday, April 23, at 1 p.m. by clicking the "Watch Webcast" icon on Gerald’s’ Book of Memory at www.Clarkfuneralchapel.com or visiting facebook.com/clarkfuneralchapel. Interment will take place in Woodland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Gerald was born on March 5, 1954, in Mt. Pleasant, son of George and Emma (Peters) Slater. Gerald proudly served his country in the United States Navy and was a proud member of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. Gerald served as Sargent at Arms from 1993 to 1995 and 2001 to 2003, and on Tribal Council in 2003. He also worked as a security manager at the Soaring Eagle Casino. He loved spending time with family and friends and watching westerns and old war movies. He enjoyed riding around Michigan, going to Shipshawana, and spending time with his grandkids.

Gerald is survived by his daughters, Stephanie Slater and Summer Peters; grandchildren, Leo Bennett III, Sandra Slater, Memigwaans Begay, Sean Begay, and Waabigwan Peters; significant other, Patricia Peters; and siblings, George (Debra) Slater, Sharon (Ralph) Matthews, and Colleen Sisco; and in-laws, Fred Cantu, Sr., Richard Boyce, and LE Reed, Sr.

Gerald was preceded in death by his son, Jeremy Slater in 1999; grandson, Skyler Ray Slater Bennett; parents; brother, Allen Slater; sisters, Helen Reed, Lorraine Kennedy, Sandra Boyce, Kelly Slater, and Bonnie Cantu; and brother-in-law, David Sisco.
