Gerald “Jerry” Anthony Smith 72 of Lake, Michigan passed away Friday, September 7, 2018 at MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland. Gerald was born March 2, 1946 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of George Edward Smith and Ruth Agnes (McFarland) Smith. Jerry graduated from Fordson High School, Dearborn, Michigan in 1965. He then enlisted in the United States Army and honorably served his country during the Vietnam War. On April 19, 1968 in Detroit, Gerald was united in marriage to his sweetheart, Ms. Margaret McNeil Stewart.
Since 1988, Mr. Smith and his family spent weekends, holidays and vacations at the family cabin in Lake. In 2016, Jerry and Margaret became full-time residents in Lake, coming from Commerce Township, Michigan. Jerry retired from Ford Motor Company on July 1, 2007 after forty two years of dedicated service. Many of his years with Ford Motor Company were spent working at the Livonia Transmission Plant. Jerry enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, throwing darts and playing pool. He was a sports fanatic, especially when it came to watching the Detroit Red Wings, Lions, Tigers and University of Michigan football games. Jerry found solitude in reading a book or watching a western movie.
Surviving Gerald is his loving wife of fifty years, Mrs. Margaret McNeil Smith, one daughter, Laura Anne Coffman and husband Adam, two sons; Jason Smith and wife Jennifer and Noel Smith and wife Loribeth, seven grandchildren; Nolan, Evan, Gannon, Chase, Blakely, Caeden and Aevry, three sisters; Jane, Elaine and Marilyn, three brothers; George, Mark and Roland, plus many nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Bernie. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Diane, one brother, Franklin, and two dogs; Sunny Boy and Jackie Boy.
Celebration of Life services honoring Mr. Smith will be held Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 12:00-2:00 p.m. at John N. Santeiu and Son Funeral Home, 1139 Inkster Road, Garden City, Michigan 48135.
