Obituary for Hans Frederick Fetting

Hans Frederick Fetting, 88, of Grand Rapids, MI, formerly Mt. Pleasant, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on Sunday, October 31, 2021, with family by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lulu Fetting, four brothers, three sisters, two infant siblings, and a newborn son, Hans Christian Fetting.

Hans graduated from Saginaw High School in 1950 and served 3 years in the U,S. Navy. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1958.

Hans and Dorothy Baker were married on August 23,1958. He earned his MA degree from the University of Michigan in 1965, and his PhD from Michigan State University in 1972. He taught English for six years at Saginaw High School. In 1965 he accepted a teaching position at Central Michigan University. He retired from the English Department in 1994 after 29 years, serving 17 years as chairperson.

Hans is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Baker Fetting; children, Katherine Fetting-Bekker, Karl Fetting (Angela Benson Fetting); and five grandchildren: Connor Fetting, Elliot Bekker, Annika Bekker, Alyssa Fetting, and Alayna Fetting; as well as several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Tom Dewaelsche.

Hans enjoyed shopping for antiques, repairing antique pottery, traveling, and vacations at Hilton Head Island, S.C. He was a dedicated founding member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant, MI, He served on the Church Council and wherever he was needed. He served on the Veterans Memorial Library Board, the Salvation Army Board, and the Substance Abuse Services Advisory Board.

The service will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday November 20, 2021 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 320 S. Bradley St, Mt. Pleasant MI, 48858, with Pastor Dana Hendershot officiating. Visitation will be held from 2:00-3 p.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Faith Hospice or Samaritas. Envelopes will be available at Clark Family Funeral Chapel & Cremation Service and the church.
