Obituary for Helen Louise Hamel

Helen Louise Hamel, 99, of Mt. Pleasant passed away April 15, 2021.

Born June 27, 1921 to Reverend Charles and Elizabeth (Draper) Biastock she was the elder of two daughters. Helen Louise spent many of her childhood years in Belding, Michigan a town she always remembered with great fondness. Following graduation from Belding High School she attended Albion College graduating in 1942. While at Albion she met W. Glen Hamel. The two were married in 1946 and took up residence in Mt. Pleasant.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church from the time she moved to Mt. Pleasant where she was active in many church activities enjoying above all the many years she sang in the church choir. She was also active in other local social organizations including Women’s Club and Festival Chorus. Helen Louise was a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed providing a welcoming home and growing a beautiful garden. She loved reading, opera, attending plays, bird watching and walking through local parks.

Helen Louise was predeceased by her husband Glen in 2013. She is survived by her sister Miriam Pede of St. Joseph, MI, three children Louise Hamel of Wooster, OH, Walter Hamel of Marquette, MI, Jane Rowland (Dale) of Jacksonville, FL and two grandsons Scott Rowland of Boulder, CO and John Rowland of Jacksonville, FL.

The family would like to thank the kind staff members at Maplewood of Mt. Pleasant for caring for Helen Louise over the last several years and especially during the difficult year of quarantine.

A memorial service for Helen will be held on Saturday, June 26, 2021 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Mt. Pleasant. Light refreshments will be available after the service.
