Obituary for James Frederick Hand

James Frederick Hand, age 80, passed away January 25, 2024, at Bay Regional Hospital in Bay City, Michigan, following a sudden heart attack.

He is survived by his wife, Penny Hand; daughters, Amanda Lynn Hand and Jamie Kayette Kuenzel; sons, Ralph James (Jill) Hand and Jacob (Christine) Hand; foster son, Steven Young; 9 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert (Donna) Hand of Sanford, MI, Thomas Hand of Dollar Bay, MI, and Donald Hand of Sanford, MI; sister, Susan (Thomas) Muto, of Midland, MI; and many close friends.

James was born in Mt. Pleasant, MI on October 14, 1943, and raised in Sanford, MI. He is the son of Clare and Edith Hand, who preceded him in death. As a teenager, Jim (Bart) lived with his grandparents, Cecil and Mary Wade in Hemlock, MI on their dairy farm.

James retired from Total Petroleum after 25 years. He was an avid collector of gas station antiques. James owned and operated late model and modified race cars. Doing this, he received many sponsorships. He always had a hand to lend when it was needed. James enjoyed horse racing and dearly loved his animals. He loved taking trips to the U.P. and watching football.

A visitation for James will be held at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Friday, February 2, 2024, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.
