James Edward Newell

March 18, 1929 – June 24, 2020

James (Jim) Newell, 91, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, (formerly of Westland) passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2020. He was born March 18, 1929, the son of John and Genevieve (Sillivan) Newell in Denver, Colorado. He grew up in Detroit and graduated from Redford High School in Redford. He was united in marriage to Freeda Elaine Parson on April 8, 1961. He retired from the Detroit Diesel division of General Motors after 30 years of service.

Jim and Freeda resided in Redford, Plymouth and Westland. They attended First Church of Christ, Scientist in Plymouth. Jim loved going out to eat and traveling, especially taking cruises. Some of his favorite travel destinations were Switzerland and Alaska. Jim was also an enthusiastic student of the stock market.

He is survived by his sister-in-law Pauline Paul of Shepherd (formerly of Dearborn Heights), niece Linda (Daryl) Amrozowicz of Shepherd, nephews Douglas (Linda) Paul of Bedford, New Hampshire and Donald (Kristi) Paul of Holland, Michigan, great-nieces, great-nephews, and his close friends Debbie and Eric Ferch of Estero, Florida. He was preceded in death by his wife Freeda.

Jim received excellent care the last two and a half years at Green Acres Assisted Living in Mt Pleasant. Heartland Hospice assisted their staff keeping him comfortable in the last few weeks of his life.

There will be no memorial or funeral service at Jim’s request. He will be buried at Cadillac Memorial Gardens West in Westland, Michigan. Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice.
