Obituary for JoAnne Mae Campbell (Ponkey)
Joanne Mae Campbell age 88 of Harrison passed away at her home surrounded by family on Wednesday, November 30, 2022. Joanne was born March 3, 1934 in Royal Oak, Michigan the daughter of Joseph L. Ponkey and Dorothy G. (Coon) Ponkey. Joanne was united in marriage to Donald C. Upton in 1950 in Royal Oak, Michigan, Mr. Upton preceded Joanne in death in 1967. In 1969, Joanne was united in marriage to Donald A. Campbell, Mr. Campbell preceded her in death in 2019.
Mrs. Campbell had resided in Harrison since 2020, moving from Inverness, Florida, where she had lived for many years. Before her retirement, Joanne worked as a store manager with J.C. Penny, Limited Corporation and Victoria Secret. When Joanne wasn’t raising her family or working, she enjoyed sewing, embroidering, writing poems, cooking and baking for her family, going camping, traveling and going above and beyond for anyone in need. She always put others before herself. Joanne will be remembered by her family for her holiday decorating and passion she demonstrated at each holiday.
Surviving Mrs. Campbell are her nine loving children: Robert Upton and wife Sue of New Berry, South Carolina, Sherrie Stradley and husband Daryl R. of New Port Richey, Florida, Rebecca Smith of Hastings, Michigan, Timothy Upton of Harrison, Dale Upton and wife Theresa of Madison Heights, Michigan, Rickie Upton of Harrison, Gary Upton and wife Doreen of Clinton Township, Michigan, Jackie Sharp and husband Craig of Harrison and Fran Leu and husband Scott of Ohio, four step-children: Debra Peacock of Florida, David Campbell of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Dianna Ray of Grand Rapids and Dawn Harrison of Indiana, 38 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, one sister, Joyce Gabler of Arizona, four brothers: Michael (Joanne) Ponkey of Michigan, Larry (Ron) Ponkey of Jacksonville, Florida, William Ponkey of Palm Coast, Florida and Gary Ponkey of Grand Blanc, Michigan, plus many nieces, nephews and extended family members. Mrs. Campbell also was preceded in death by her parents, one step-son, Bruce Campbell and one brother, Joseph “Butch” Ponkey.
Celebration of Life services honoring Mrs. Campbell will be held Saturday, January 28, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. from John J. Carton #436 F. & A.M., 230 East Main Street, Harrison. A time of gathering will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2023 from 12:00 p.m. until time of service. Inurnment will be in White Chapel Memorial Park, Troy, Michigan.
