Obituary for Jon Peter "Pete" VanCamp

Jon Peter “Pete” Van Camp passed away at his home in Houghton Lake, Michigan after a short battle with colon cancer on September 24, 2020. He was 84 years old.
Pete was born on March 16, 1936 and spent much of his younger years living on Green Lake in West Bloomfield Township where he developed his love of boating. He attended the University of Michigan and made several lifelong friends as a member of Chi Phi fraternity.
After graduation, he combined his natural ability with numbers and an approachable demeanor to launch a successful career in car sales. Pete married his wife, Barbara, in 1964 and moved to Lake Sherwood in Commerce Township, Michigan where he continued to live for 46 years.
He was the owner of Van Camp Chevrolet in Milford, Michigan, a business he ran for more than two decades. Pete’s reputation for honesty earned him many repeat customers when he continued working in car sales after the dealership was sold. Pete retired in 2001. He and Barbara began splitting their time between Hutchinson Island, Florida and Houghton Lake in 2010.
He was a devout Catholic and an avid golfer, boater and bicycler. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he taught his children and grandchildren life lessons using humor and stories. He will be remembered as a kind, gentle and patient soul who left the world better than he found it.
Pete will be sorely missed by his wife, Barbara; sons, Jon (Tricia) Van Camp, Kurt (Colleen) Van Camp; daughter, Lisa (Chris) Bolla; sister, Molly Woodford; six grandchildren and countless lifelong friends and golfing buddies. He will be cremated in accordance with his wishes.
Memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
