Obituary for Joseph Ibrahim Estephan

Dr. Joseph Estephan passed away Saturday, May 12th, 2017 around 11 p.m. at Ingham County Medical Facility after battling cancer for several years. He was 82. Born in Lebanon, Dr. Estephan moved to the United States to further his education. He met his wife Annette Lewis while pursuing his master’s degree in business administration at Andrews University. They married on her birthday, June 4, 1956. He later received his PhD in psychology and held various administrative positions in high schools and universities. He also served as president of Middle East College in Beirut. Besides being an accomplished administrator, he was active in the Seventh Day Adventist community. He was passionate about his faith throughout his life. He presented sermons at SDA churches and was involved in missionary trips overseas. He attended Mt. Pleasant Seventh Day Adventist Church for over 15 years. He also took pride in having a “green thumb” and being an excellent cook. His kitchen often smelled of fresh pita bread and Mediterranean spices. He had several close friends and had a way of making new ones wherever he went. While having many passions and talents, above all he cherished his family. His love was unconditional and special. There is nothing he wouldn’t have done for his children and grandchildren. This love has left an indelible mark on his family. Though he spent most of his later years in the U.S., his heart belonged to his home country of Lebanon. There too, he was beloved and respected. The love of his homeland was well known to those who knew him. He travelled to Lebanon often until he was physically incapable of doing so. He was preceded in death by his parents Ibrahim and Nabiha, his brothers Noel, Salim, Elias, and his daughter JoAnn. He is survived by his wife Annette; children John (Mary), Jannette, Joseph Jr., and Jack (Amy); and his grandchildren Nicole, Lauren, Spencer, Eli, Hunter, and River. The service will be held at the Mount Pleasant Seventh Day Adventist Church on Sunday, July 16th at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Pardee Cancer Foundation of Mt. Pleasant.
