Obituary for Kenneth Eugene Seymour

Kenneth Eugene Seymour, age 75, affectionately known as Ken, took his last breath at his home in Farwell, with his family by his side on March 30, 2024. Ken was born in his childhood home in Gilmore Township on April 12, 1948. He was the second of two sons born to Donald and Grace (Beck) Seymour. As kids, Ken and his brother Gary looked forward to the occasional treat when they would head to the A&W in town where they could savor ice cold root beer in a frosted glass. As adults, they lived about a mile apart and even took several trips to Canada to go fishing. Ken and Gary remained close friends Ken’s entire life.

When Ken was in high school, he met the beautiful Mary Brown. Their romance was put on pause so Ken could serve his country honorably in the Army. After completing his time in Vietnam, he flew home to be united in marriage to Mary on August 16, 1969. He and Mary finished his tour of duty in Kansas.

Ken and Mary built a life together in Farwell. They had sons, Chris and Kevin, who kept them running from one sporting event to another. When Ken was not hard at work for the Isabella County Road Commission, he was coaching his sons’ baseball teams. He became the president of the Weidman Youth Baseball League, where his responsibilities included scheduling games, arranging for coaches, purchasing uniforms and other gear, and preparing the baseball diamond for games. Ken was never one to sit idle.

When their sons were adults and had families of their own, Ken and Mary enjoyed all the events grandchildren added to the mix. They could be found at sporting events, concerts, plays, birthdays, and holiday celebrations. They loved their grandchildren dearly. Some of their favorite times were spent camping with Chris and Kevin and their wives and children. Mary passed away suddenly on September 28, 2008.

Ken was an elder at the Gilmore Church of Christ. He was very active in many facets of the church. It was at church where Ken and the former Janet (Pitts) Apple faithfully served others. Jan’s husband had passed away several years before Mary, and they saw in each other a kinship that eventually led to another chance for love and companionship. Ken and Jan were married on April 18, 2009. Together they celebrated the milestones of their children and grandchildren. While the merging of the two families kept them busy, they still found time to stay active in their church and every summer they attended Ken’s military reunion. Jan stayed by Ken’s side and tenderly cared for him, right up until the end.

Ken was a very spiritual man who worked hard and loved his family deeply. He embodied a spirit of faith, honor, duty, and respect. He was quick to lend a hand and could always be counted on to have the answers when something needed to be accomplished. He was a beacon of strength and generosity, and he will be greatly missed.

In addition to his loving wife Jan, Ken’s legacy lives on through his devoted sons, Christopher (Wendy) Seymour, Kevin (Danielle) Seymour; cherished grandchildren, Dakota (Jasmine) Seymour, Brooke (Colin) Wever, Ash Seymour, Lauren (Brady) Hess, Logan Seymour, Nicholas Seymour, Kelsey Seymour, Sydney Seymour; adored great-grandchildren, Kaia Seymour, Thalya Seymour, and one highly anticipated Hess great-grandchild on the way; brother, Gary Seymour; sister-in-law, Kathy (Larry) Crawford, brother-in-law, Neil (Marlene) Brown; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Ken is also lovingly remembered by Jan’s children, Ryan (Darcie) Apple, Shannon (Joshua) Kelley, and Christy (David) Cornett; and Jan’s twelve grandchildren. Ken was deeply touched by how readily they all made him a part of their family.

Ken was greeted in Heaven by his parents; wife, Mary Seymour; sister-in-law, Sandra Seymour; and Jan’s granddaughter, Selah Apple.
