Obituary for Lois Ann Sandbrook (Green)

Lois Ann (Green) Sandbrook died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, January 31, 2021. Lois was born to Russell and Grace (Schlader) Green on September 21, 1934 in Midland, MI.

On August 16, 1957 she married Richard Curtiss Sandbrook, the love of her life. Together they raised 5 children near Winn, Michigan.

She attended Midland High School and Central Michigan College, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics in 1957.

Lois taught Home Economics at Blanchard High School for a year before starting her family. She was a stay-at-home Mom to their five children, and as they grew, she returned to CMU to obtain a master’s degree in Consumer Education. She was a substitute teacher for Montabella Schools when time allowed. She later taught at Montcalm Community College and CMU. She had a Litton microwave business when microwaves were relatively new. She taught microwave cooking schools around the state to promote sales. She eventually took a job as Sales Manager for Saginaw Distributors, a large Litton distributor, in Saginaw, Michigan.

She returned to education by dedicating many years as a District Manager for World Book Encyclopedias. She enjoyed working with families and her team to promote lifelong learning.

Once her kids were mostly grown, and she could have easily relaxed and retired, she and Richard continued their passion for kids and learning by founding the Winn Area Activity Center, an after-school and summer camp program based at Winn Elementary School. It grew under their leadership and it has since expanded even further under the current leadership team. It now has locations in Shepherd and Beal City as well as the original program in Winn. A preschool program in Beal City was named the Sandbrook Learning Center in Richard and Lois’s honor.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of nearly 52 years, Richard.

She is survived by her sister, Janet Rice; her sister-in-law, Virgilene Boyer; her children, Nancy (Stuart) Goodyear, Linda (Phillip) Koro, Judi (John) DiSabato, Thomas (Jacqueline) Sandbrook, Elaine (John) DeVlieger; grandchildren, Shawn Collins, Kara DeVlieger, Kelli DeVlieger, Lauren and Jesse Jensen, Richard Goodyear, Patrick Koro, Rachelle and Christopher Heck, Sarah and Jacob Cochrane, Victoria Koro, Sophia DeVlieger; great grandchildren, Hoyt Jensen, Adelaide Heck, and Oliver Jensen. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
