Margaret (Peg) Jackson Hicks
Margaret (Peg) Ann Jackson Hicks, of East Andre Court in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend to all who her met her, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, August 18, 2021. She was 85.
Born in Sharpsville, Pennsylvania, on February 27, 1936, Peg was the youngest of Benjamin F. and Anna Leora (Ayres) Jackson’s four children. She graduated from East Palestine high school and earned her associate’s degree from Grove City College, a teaching degree from Kent State University, and a master’s degree in teaching special education from Central Michigan University.
At Kent State, she met Donald Lockard Hicks. Peg and Don wed at the Church of the Redeemer in Lorain, Ohio, on June 17, 1961, in a ceremony performed by the groom’s father, The Reverend Frederick Goodhue Hicks. They were married for 22 years before Don’s passing on October 3, 1983.
Peg and Don lived in Amherst, Ohio, for 14 years. During that time, she started her teaching career in Amherst public schools, before taking a hiatus from teaching in 1962 to dedicate her time to raising her two boys. In 1975, the couple moved their family to Mt. Pleasant where she proudly resumed her teaching career in 1984. Peg taught special education classes at Mt. Pleasant High School and West Intermediate for 18 years before retiring in 1999.
She was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where she previously served as treasurer and was a lay reader and long-time member of the alter guild. She also participated in several community service organizations including PEO and Circle of Friends, taught adult literacy classes, and was a past board member and treasurer of the Mt. Pleasant Library.
A lifelong learner, she was a veracious reader and avid traveler. Although she explored such far-away places as Australia, Morocco, England, Scotland, and Costa Rica, among many others, her favorite spot was her cottage on Higgins Lake in Roscommon, Michigan.
Peg loved the theater and especially enjoyed catching a performance starring her oldest son or one of her grandchildren. She was a talented wordsmith who was a whiz at crossword puzzles and Scrabble. Also a skilled card player, she was always up for a game of Euchre, cribbage, or bridge.
Peg is survived by her son, Donald Fredrick Hicks (Leigh) of Coldwater, Michigan; her son, Steven Hunter Hicks (Gwyn) of Falls Church, Virginia; and seven grandchildren: Katherine, Benjamin, Emily, Joseph, Maggie, Hunter, and Abigail, as well as several nephews and great nephews and nieces.
In addition to her husband and parents, she is proceeded in death by her brother, John Jackson of Houston, Texas, and his wife, Ann; her sister, Marjorie Jackson Kinney of East Petersburg, Pennsylvania, and her husband, Ken; her brother, Benjamin Jackson, of Naples, Florida, and his partner, Jimmy; and her brother-in-law, David Hicks, of Thorton, Colorado.
A celebration of Peg’s life will be held at 1 pm EST on August 28, 2021, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 206 W. Maple Street, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. The service will be live-streamed on St. John’s YouTube channel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church or the Mt. Pleasant Public Schools Education Foundation.
