Obituary for Michael James Ley

LEY, MICHAEL JAMES, age 66, of Weidman, passed away Friday, January 14, 2022, at McLaren Central Michigan.

Mike was born on December 27, 1955, in Alma, Michigan, the son of John and Betty (Wadle) Ley. Mike graduated from Shepherd High School with the class of 1975, where he won the first wrestling state champion title for Shepherd. He was a two-time state wrestling champion, took third place in states and was selected as a high school All American. Mike was also an outstanding football player. He continued his wrestling at CMU and MSU and wrestled in the 1977 Deaf Olympics, taking home a silver and bronze medal for the United States. Mike retired from Delfield after 37 years of service. He was a gold member of NRA and loved hunting and fishing. Mike was an amazing dad; he was very active with his kids, always planning fun family adventures. He loved spending time with his family, especially watching his grandsons’ sports. Mike was an avid MSU fan, always rooting for the green and white. He liked camping, his annual tubing trip with his family and friends, boating, and spending time doing anything outdoors.

Mike is survived by his daughter Kathryn Ley of Mt. Pleasant; son John (Ronette) Ley of Lake Isabella; grandchildren Glendon Bennett, John Keihl, Emma and Ella Ley; mother Betty Langlois of Winn; brothers Steve (Tamara) Ley of Millington, Dan (Pat) Ley of Cheyenne, WY; sister Kathy McDonald of Winn; former wife and mother to his children, Theresa Chorenko of Merrill; great friend Sharon Dorset of Tigard, OR; best friends Pat Ralston of Mt. Pleasant, Kirk Arndt of Beal City, Dave Culhane of Weidman; and several nieces and nephews.

Mike was preceded in death by his father John Ley; sister Ann McCloy; and stepfather Jim Langlois.

Funeral Services for Mike will be held at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Thursday, January 20, 2022, at 12 p.m. with Benjamen Evers officiating. A luncheon will immediately follow at Reflections Reception Center. Burial will take place at St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral chapel and on Thursday beginning at 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.
