Obituary for Nancy Joan Irwin (Webber)

Nancy Joan Irwin, born Nancy Joan Webber on March 29, 1944, died of natural causes on January 29, 2024 at the age of 79. She lived her life as a co-owner and operator of three businesses over many decades, starting with a motel in Oscoda, a dairy farm in Rosebush, and finally Hafer Hardware in Mount Pleasant until her retirement in 2008. Prior to becoming a businesswoman, she worked as an English teacher.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Glen Irwin; her son Glen Irwin II, daughter, Tracy Falbe; grandsons, Curtis Falbe and Kyle Falbe; son-in-law, Scott Falbe; siblings, Richard and Nadine; nieces, Michelle and Lisa; and nephews, Steven, David, Jay, and Peter. She was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara; parents, Richard Webber and Joan Webber; and nephew, Michael.

She graduated from Cass Technical High School in Detroit in 1961 and graduated from Wayne State University in 1966 with degrees in English and Biology. Her first two years of college were spent at Central Michigan University where she met her husband.

Nancy was a talented artist able to draw and paint with great accuracy and style. She loved dancing as well and participated in a dance group for many years.

Writing and literature were great passions of hers. She wrote the novel “Laugh at Any Mortal Thing,” a coming-of-age story inspired by her formative years growing up in Detroit during the 1950s and 1960s. She belonged to a writing group in Mount Pleasant in the 1990s and 2000s.

Her love of art and literature was reflective in her entertainment choices. Her natural optimism for the future made her a lifelong fan of “Star Trek,” which she watched when it first aired in the 1960s. She made sure to raise her children with an appreciation for “Star Trek.” She also admired “Star Wars” and called “Empire Strikes Back” the greatest movie ever.

Nancy served a four-year, elected term as Union Township Trustee from 1988 to 1992.

Her friends and family who visited her Mount Pleasant home will recall the lavish display of potted flowers on the front porch that she grew every year for decades.

Cats had a special connection with Nancy. She raised many felines over the years, with her final cat partner being Yeti, who would wait patiently in the windowsill for Nancy to return from vacation.

Nancy is remembered fondly by her family and friends for her cheerfulness, generosity, and devotion to taking care of everybody.

The family will receive friends for a visitation at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Saturday, February 3, 2024 from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Envelopes will be available at the Funeral Chapel.
