Obituary for Nancy Jean Stegman
Nancy Jean Stegman (Johnson), age 81, was born May 4, 1937 in Laurium, MI to Holger and Lucy Viola Johnson. She grew up on Isle Royale, where the family ran a fishing operation and resort at Chippewa Harbor; both before and after the island became a national park. Nancy remained passionate about Isle Royale, and has kept the Johnson family heritage alive on the island in partnership with the national park service, by providing pictures and stories about her family life. Recently, through community funding, she was able to preserve the last standing cabin at the family’s resort. A dedication was presented, cementing the family history there for years to come. Nancy could be found almost every July on a tour boat revisiting Isle Royale and Chippewa Harbor, while giving real accounts to park visitors about life growing up on the island.
Nancy graduated from Roscommon High School in Roscommon, MI June of 1955. She married Harold W Stegman on February 15, 1958 in Roscommon, Michigan. They lived in Oscoda, MI; Big Rapids, MI, and again in Roscommon, MI. In 1963 they returned to Harold’s hometown, Mount Pleasant, MI; and went to work for Cook Communication Co. together. Nancy and Harold partnered in opening their own communications business, Pro Comm Inc. in November 1976. She retired at age 75 from the business in 2012.
When Nancy wasn’t planning her next trip to Isle Royale, or ensuring all i’s and t’s were dotted and crossed at Pro Comm, she would be on the golf course or in front of her piano. She loved music, and even toured with the Sweet Adelines, choir group for a while. Nancy was also an avid hunter, and often times would be the only one at deer camp to nab a deer during rifle season.
She is survived by her children, Stacey (Andrea) of St. Petersburg, Florida, Harold Jr. (Kim) of Shepherd, Michigan, and Sandra of St. Petersburg, Florida; grandchildren, Nicole Best, Derek Best, Haley (Travis) Balzer, Tyler (Courtney) Stegman, and Samantha Stegman; great-grandchildren Elliana and Giavana Henderson, Makayla Hyde and Mia Balzer, Theodore C Stegman, and Isaiah Stegman.
Funeral services for Nancy will be held at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on February 5th at 11 a.m. A luncheon will follow in Reflections Reception Center. The family will receive friends on Monday evening, February 4th from 5-8 p.m. and on Tuesday, February 5th from 10-11 a.m. prior to service. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Stegman Fund of the Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation.
