Obituary for Norma Ilene Brien

BRIEN, NORMA ILENE, age 98, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2021, at Crestwood Village in Mt. Pleasant.

Norma was born September 9, 1922, in Chippewa Township, the daughter of Maynard and Nellie (Imhoff) Gilmore. She was married to Charles “Red” Emerald Brien on March 27, 1941. He preceded her in death in 2001. She retired from the Mt. Pleasant Regional Center after 25 years. Norma, a member of Countryside United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, played the piano as her mother and later Phyllis Gilmore played the organ. She was a member of Shepherd Historical Society, State Employees Retirement Association, and did volunteer work at Laurels of Mt. Pleasant. Reading, sewing, quilting, gardening, and crafting were a part of her days. Norma and Red loved traveling, especially to Florida for many years.

Norma is survived by her daughter Jan (Chuck) Huffman of Mt. Pleasant, Chuck (Judee) Brien of Potterville, Sue Patz of Sumner, Coni (Al) Bahr of Caro; 9 grandchildren: Victoria Sladek, Kathy (Denise) Huffman, Jasmine (TJ) Rogness, Charmagne (Dean) Brandenburg, Jennette Bruster, Brian Patz, Kristin (Travis) Suderman, Gretchen (Matt) Weaver, and Becky (Charles) Meyerholt ; 11 great-grandchildren: Reid Sladek, Peter Sladek, Lucy Rogness, Grady Rogness, Tanya Patz, LCPL Hannah Patz, Noah Suderman, Shaniece Bruster, Auriyonn Bruster, Zion Bruster, Jayla Bruster; and sister Nelda Gilmore of Mt. Pleasant.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son-in-law Vern Patz; and brothers Norris and O.W. “Bud” Gilmore.

A Celebration of Life for Norma will be held at Countryside United Methodist Church on Saturday, August 7, 2021, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Jana Lynn Almeida officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Norma’s family would like to extend their appreciation to her caregivers and the staff at Crestwood Village for their compassionate care over the years.
