Obituary for Patricia Ann Schafer

Schafer, Patricia Ann, age 85, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2021, at Green Acres Assisted Living in Mt. Pleasant.

A Funeral Mass for Pat will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 25, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Don Henkes officiating. Rite of Committal will follow in St. Henry’s Cemetery in Rosebush. An outdoor luncheon will be held after graveside services at Clark Family Funeral Chapel-West Lawn Pavilion. The family will receive friends from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. on Monday, May 24, at Clark Family Funeral Chapel and from 10 a.m. until the time of Funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice. Envelopes will be available at Clark Family Funeral Chapel and at the church.

Pat was born on March 24, 1936, in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of Victor and Erie (Valentine) Pety. She graduated in the Class of 1954 from Mt. Pleasant High School. Pat had worked at Central Michigan University as a switchboard operator for 14 years, retiring in 1998 and Central Michigan Community Hospital for 24 years, retiring in 1984. Pat married Gerald “Chum” Schafer on September 1, 1956, at St. Philomenia Church in Beal City. She was a parishioner of St. Henry’s Parish and then Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was a member of the Professional Clown Association and volunteered for the Commission on Aging. Pat enjoyed golfing, traveling, dining out, gardening, and sewing. She loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Pat is survived by her significant other, Jack Hartupee; children Michael (Kiyomi) Schafer of Midland, Jill Maxwell of Tuscon, AZ, Jennifer (Ted) Hess of Tucson, AZ; daughter-in-law Dr. Christine Schafer of Hudsonville; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and sister Christie Kidder of Mt. Pleasant.

Pat was preceded in death by her husband Gerald “Chum” Schafer; son Dr. Brian Schafer; her parents; and brother Henry Pety.
