Obituary for Peggy Jane Straus

Straus, Peggy Jane, 78, of Weidman, passed away Saturday, December 24, 2022, at her home surrounded by her children.

A Funeral Mass for Peggy will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 28, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Beal City with Father Thomas McNamara as celebrant. Following the committal at St. Joseph Cemetery, all are invited to a luncheon at the Beal City Knights of Columbus Hall. The family will receive friends in the gathering room of the church on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Visitation continues at the church on Wednesday one hour prior to Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph the Worker Church, or Beal City Sports Booster. Envelopes will be available at the church or at Clark Funeral Chapel.

Peggy was born January 16, 1944, in Weidman, to the late Richard “Gary” Sprague and Dorothy (Klumpp) Sprague and raised by her adopted mother Lucinda (Snider) Sprague. She graduated as class president from Weidman highschool in 1962. Peggy married Frederick Joseph Straus on August 18, 1962 at St. Joseph Catholic Church Beal City. Along with her husband, she owned and operated Straus Packing for 20+ years and was a homemaker. Peggy is a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening, puzzles, and her dogs. Peggy loved nothing more than spending time taking care of her grandchildren.

Peggy is survived by her children, Frederick “Mick” (Leslie) Straus of Weidman, Patricia “Tricia” (Don) Cotter of Mt. Pleasant, Dorothy “Dottie” (Jon) Fletcher of Weidman; honorary son, Russ (Carrie) Smith of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Amanda (Ed) Schafer of Mt. Pleasant, Dan Straus of Littlefield Lake, Easton Straus of Weidman, Michelle Cotter of Mt. Pleasant, Sean Cotter of Mt. Pleasant, Kylis Fletcher of Weidman, Kelsey Fletcher of Weidman; honorary grandchildren, Tristan Smith and Chase Smith of Mt. Pleasant; great-grandchildren, Matilda “Tilly” Schafer, Amelia Schafer, Oliver Schafer, Lucille “Lucy” Schafer; brother, Michael (Sue) Sprague of Weidman: sister, Sally (Jerry) Bazaire of Arizona; brothers-in-law, Cal Havekost, Larry Straus, Larry Mead; sisters-in-law, Nancy (Ray) Chaplin, Vera Straus, Margaret Simmer, Irene Straus; special friends, Tom (Katrien) De Vos and family.
