Obituary for Phyllis Marie Taylor

After a long and valuable life, Phyllis Marie Taylor died in the early morning of October 15, 2022. Phyllis was the first born child of Beatrice (Stowell) and Albert Pickens of Shepherd. Her first husband, Ivan Harrison Meier, died when their two sons, Terry and Dale Meier, were small children. Phyllis married William L. “Billy” Taylor in 1948 and they shared 62 years of a busy, happy life together in Mt. Pleasant, Alabama and Brimley. After Bill died in 2010, Phyllis made her home in Mt. Pleasant.

Phyllis was Valedictorian of her high school class. She retired from what was then called the “State Home”. An avid golfer and bowler, she continued in league play into her 90’s. She played softball in her youth and followed the Tigers throughout her life. Phyllis was proud to be President the Railroad preservation group in Brimley and a long-time member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Perdido Beach Fire Department in Alabama. Phyllis was very skilled at knitting and crochet, loved reading a good mystery and solving crossword puzzles.

Phyllis is survived by her sons Terry (Helen) Meier of Rosebush, their son Morgan of Rosebush; Dale Meier of Shepherd and his children William Meier of Mt. Pleasant and Jillaine (Dan) Marquis and their children of Cold Water Lake; her sister Ernestine Pohl, brothers Gale Pickens (Sue) of WA state, LJ Pickens of Mt. Pleasant; her extended family “the Morey kids” Pam (Neil) Blake, Jackie Morey, Cindy (Chuck) Caszatt, Kim Morey and David Morey and their children and their grandchildren as well as many others of the “great” and the “grand” generations.

Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, her husbands Ivan and Bill, her sister Tracey Ullom and her “sister of her heart” cousin Shirley (Stowell) Campbell.

As she wished, Phyllis will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Phyllis’s family gives heartfelt thanks to two groups of wonderful people: ProMedica Hospice staff for the invaluable service, support and care they provided to Phyllis and her family; and to the administrative, food service and caregiving staff of Comfort Care Assisted Living (Maplewood) over her final months of life.
