Obituary for Richard Roy Levitan

Richard Roy Levitan, 82, longtime Grosse Pointe resident, and recently of Mt Pleasant, Michigan, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, at Stone Lodge Memory Care in Shepherd, Michigan on Saturday, February 6, 2021 after a long illness.

Dick was born in Detroit, Michigan to Arthur and Theresa (Sadowski) Levitan. He graduated from Denby High School and Western Michigan University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. While at Western, Dick was elected president of Delta Upsilon fraternity, and, as an alumnus, he served as a trustee. He and Bonnie were very active Western Michigan alumni, returning to Kalamazoo every year for homecoming, celebrating and reminiscing with his beloved Delta Upsilon brothers and their wives. He maintained many lifelong friendships with high school and college friends.

After college, Dick enlisted in the Michigan Air National Guard, where he became an aerial photography specialist. He was activated into the United States Air Force for the 1967 Detroit riots. During his early civilian career, he worked for Chrysler Corporation Missile Division, assisting in the development of the Redstone and Mercury missiles. He went on to spend many years at Chrysler Realty in commercial dealership development and property management throughout the Western United States and Alaska. He spent his later career in industrial steel sales.

Dick was first and foremost, a devoted husband and family man. He loved a rousing game of Euchre, a day on the golf course, and a good Manhattan, even more so if he was enjoying it while vacationing up North on Torch Lake. His love of family, friends and country was unmatched. If love could have saved him, he would have lived forever.

Dick is survived by his wife of 59 years, Bonnie; children Susan (Doug) Lobsinger of Mt Pleasant, Michigan and Bradley (Lisa) Levitan of St Clair Shores, Michigan; grandchildren, Ashley, Ashley, Randy and David, three great grandchildren; his sisters-in-law, Jeannie (Ron) Shaffer and Susan (Steve) Taylor, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Archie, Ronald, Harry and Gerald, as well as his nephew, Kevin and great niece, Elaine.

The family would like to thank Lois Montgomery and the staff of Stone Lodge Memory Care Facility in Shepherd, Michigan for their tender and compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to Stone Lodge Memory Care, 415 N. Chippewa St., Shepherd, MI 48883. In light of the global pandemic, no services will be held at this time.
