Obituary for Robert Sterling Allemier

Robert Sterling Allemier, age 73, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan passed away Friday, April 14, 2023.

Robert was our much loved and treasured husband, dad, grandpa, brother, uncle, and son. Continuing on in life to cherish his memory are his devoted wife of over 28 years, Mary (Leutzinger) Allemier; son Michael (Su Rueksujarit) Allemier; daughter Amy (Joe) Sims; daughter Danielle (Mike Oakman) LaReau; grandchildren Zachary Sims, Dylan Sims, and Giana LaReau; siblings Karen (Barry) Smith, Tom Allemier, and Mary Anne Stine; nephew Jeremy (Stephanie) Daniels; and nieces McKenzie (Justin) Shoemaker, Madison Allemier and Kirsten Stine. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Frances Allemier, and his son Robert Justin Allemier.

Robert Sterling Allemier was born on May 31, 1949 on a naval base in San Diego California, the first child of Robert and Jane (Shimer) Allemier and grew up in Coldwater Michigan. Robert graduated from Coldwater High School in 1967 where he played football and wrestled. In his early twenties Robert sang vocals and played guitar with his band “Raspberry Jam.” With his young family in tow, he also enjoyed houseboat trips down the Muskegon River and camping at Brower State Park. Robert has always been an outdoorsman, enjoying many hunting and fishing trips over the years. Robert was no slouch in the kitchen and enjoyed cooking and grilling. Throughout his life he enjoyed international and domestic travel.

The past handful of years Robert and Mary found their way back to Michigan to enjoy “retirement” and all the beautiful seasons that Michigan has to offer. While Robert endured some health challenges over the years, that did not hinder his passion for setting new goals, starting new endeavors, and continuing to empower others.

Robert took his first martial arts class at 10 years old. Robert later met HU Lee in 1969 at a tournament which changed the direction of his life and career aspirations. In the early 1970s he opened his first martial arts school in Lansing Michigan. He would go on to open more schools in the greater Lansing area and mentor his first students in pursuing their own dreams of becoming school owners themselves. In 1981, he moved to Dallas Texas to expand the vision of the American Taekwondo Association (ATA). It was in the mid-1980s when Eternal Grand Master HU Lee, then Master Allemier and Masters’ Council members had the vision to develop the Songahm forms and the Songahm style of martial arts. In 2013, then Chief Master Allemier was honored with the ATA Lifetime Achievement Award. And in 2016, Chief Master Allemier was inducted as Grand Master Robert S. Allemier, 9th degree black belt. Grand Master Allemier spent over 50 years of his life dedicated to martial arts and continuing Eternal Grand Master HU Lee’s vision.

Robert’s greatest joy was sharing his knowledge and being a mentor, leader, instructor, and friend. Many would agree that Robert was larger than life and he will be missed immensely by his family, friends, students, and martial arts community.

In lieu of flowers, please carry on Robert’s memory and legacy by making goals, striving to reach them, by sharing your knowledge, and supporting people to help them be the best version of themselves.

A celebration of life will be held from 11:00am to 2:00pm on Friday, May 12, 2023 at the Brookshire Inn (205 W Church St, Williamston, Michigan 48895).
