Obituary for Russell Gale Torpey

TORPEY, RUSSELL GALE, age 81, of Barryton, has gone to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his family.

Funeral Services for Russell will take place at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Monday, March 18, 2024, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Phillip Mills officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant. A luncheon will take place at Reflections Reception Center following the burial. The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 17, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the funeral chapel and on Monday beginning at 10 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pacific Garden Mission, 1458 S. Canal Street, Chicago, IL 60607-5201. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Russell was born March 12, 1942, in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Leo and Reita (Harrison) Torpey, Sr. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School with the class of 1960. Following graduation, Russell went to work for the pipeline business from 1961-1977. He married Patricia Wilson on April 27, 1963, in Mt. Pleasant. Russell owned and operated R.G. Torpey Excavating from 1977-2022 and Central Michigan Sand and Gravel from 1983-2015. He loved his work and helping people. Russell and Pat liked to search for antiques.

Russell is survived by his wife Pat Torpey; daughter Kelley (David) Harnish of Allegan; son Tim (Charity) Torpey of Barryton; grandchildren Benjamin (Delaney) Harnish, Cody Torpey, and Bailey Torpey, all of Barryton; sisters Elouise Wilson of Mt. Pleasant, Elda Clark of Boynton Beach, FL; brother-in-law Don Kenny of Shepherd; sister-in-law Lucille Torpey of Flint; and many nieces and nephews.

Russell was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister Onalee, brother Leo Torpey, Jr., sister Bonnie (Donal “Scuff”) Bauder, brother Richard “Dicky” Torpey, sister Shelby Kenny, and brother-in-law Jim Wilson.
