Obituary for Ruth L. Hillis
Ruth L. Hillis, age 97, of Midland, passed away on August 23, 2021. She had been a long time resident of Mt. Pleasant.
Services for Ruth will be held at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Friday, August 27, 2021, at 12 PM with Pastor Jacob Behnken officiating. A luncheon will follow at Reflections Reception Center on site. The family will also receive friends on Thursday, August 26 from 4-8 PM.
Ruth was born on March 2, 1924, in Saginaw, the daughter of Carl and Anna (Fahrenbruch) Blehm. She was a 1942 graduate of St. Charles high school. Ruth married Jack William (Bill) Hillis on November 22, 1947, in Chesaning.
She loved children. She was a room mother, an active PTA participant, and a leader of Cub Scouts and Brownies. She provided home-based child care to others for 11 years. She partnered with her husband in his work until both retired at age 72 in 1996. Always a woman of strong faith, she very actively helped at her local church until age 80.
Ruth is survived by her husband of nearly 74 years: Bill Hillis; son: Jay Hillis of East Lansing; daughter: Lynda VanOmmeren of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren: Lisa (Devin Millions) VanOmmeren of Midland, Lori (Justin) Mullins of East Lansing and Thomas VanOmmeren of Mt. Pleasant; great grandchildren: Anika and Ethan Mullins; and brother: Elmer Blehm of Hemlock.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and two sisters, as well as by a sister and brother who died in infancy.
Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant or the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Midland. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.
