Obituary for Sarah Ann Delia

DELIA, SARAH ANN, age 83, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Friday, October 6, 2023, at McLaren Central Michigan Hospital.

Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Friday, October 13, 2023, at 11 a.m. with Father Tom McNamara officiating. Rite of Burial for Sarah will immediately follow at Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Clark Family Funeral Chapel and on Friday beginning at 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the League of Women Voters Mt Pleasant Area (Post Office Box 1352, Mount Pleasant, MI 48804-1352 or lwvmpmi.org) or to Questers (checks payable to Isaac A. Fancher #425 (in care of) Connie Richardson, 1211 Glenwood Drive, Mt. Pleasant, MI 48858). Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel and the church.

Sarah was born August 7, 1940, in New York City, NY, the daughter of William and Katherine (Conway) Murphy. She married Thomas J. Delia on August 22, 1964, in New York City. Sarah earned her master’s degree from Hunter College and became a researcher for Sloan Kettering Institute for Cancer Research. She taught chemistry at CMU and Alma College for many years. In her spare time, Sarah was part of several book clubs to share her love of reading with local friends. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, and participating in making her community stronger. She was an integral member and leader of the League of Women voters at the local, state and national level. Sarah was a charter member of the Mt. Pleasant chapter of Questers, an organization dedicated to preservation, restoration, and education of historical sites. Sarah was a Sacred Heart parishioner for many years, where she served many different roles.

Sarah is survived by her husband Thomas J. Delia; children Sarah M. (Frank Mack) Delia of Charleston, SC, Catherine E. Delia of Rochester, NY, Frank W. (Jennifer Alley) Delia of Orcas Island, WA, Alice E. Delia of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren Jason Mack, Rebecca Mack, Sam Delia-Alley, Lucia Delia-Alley, Isabel Delia-Alley; nephews Kevin Murphy, Kathleen Murphy, and Daniel Crotty.

Sarah was preceded in death by her parents; brothers William and Stephen Murphy; and sister Mary Crotty.
