Obituary for Stanley Lloyd Phelps

PHELPS, STANLEY LLOYD, age 83, of Mt. Pleasant passed away Saturday, April 24, 2021, at his home under the care of McLaren Hospice.

A Funeral Mass for Stanley will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Wednesday, April 28, at 11 a.m. with Fr. Loren Kalinowski officiating. Rite of Committal will follow in Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, April 27, from 4 until 8 p.m. with a Vigil at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church the day of the service from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Tuition Assistance Program or McLaren Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Stanley was born on June 13, 1937, in Isabella County, son of Clarence and Nellie (Vinton) Phelps. He married Shirley Ann Kirkey on February 9, 1957, at Sacred Heart Church. Stanley was a parishioner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a volunteer firefighter for Shepherd and the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe for over 20 years. Stanley worked at Halliburton Services, Dow Chemical, and owned and operated the Oil City Bar with his brother, Sam. Stanley and Shirley also owned and operated Leisure Living Assisted Living for over 12 years. He enjoyed traveling, hunting, camping, and spending time with his family.

Stanley is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley; children, Deborah Schafer, Deanna (Tom) Curtiss, Donald (Tina) Phelps, all of Mt. Pleasant, and David (Rhonda) Phelps of Pigeon; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Hillman of Mt. Pleasant, and JoAnn (Virl) Wright of Farwell.

Stanley was preceded in death by his daughter, Delinda Phelps; grandson, Dean Curtiss; son-in-law, Phillip Schafer; parents; brothers, Gerald and Samuel Phelps; and sisters, Frances (Ford) Brown, Emily (Clark) Campbell, Virginia Haas, and Beverly (Don) Kruger.
