Obituary for Thomas Joseph Cashen

Thomas J. Cashen, age 87, passed away peacefully at Crestwood Village surrounded by their wonderful staff, hospice and family. Tom will be cremated and buried at Lincoln Township Cemetery in the spring. Per Tom's request, there will be no funeral services.

Tom was born September 3, 1936, in Mt. Pleasant, the son of the late Leo and Alma (Esch) Cashen. Tom was a 1956 graduate of Sacred Heart Academy and inducted into the Sacred Heart Athletic Hall of Fame in 1983. After graduation, Tom served in the United States Marine Corps. On September 24, 1960, Tom married Janet Y. Ervans and was blessed with four sons, Craig Cashen of Rochester NY, Gary Cashen of Shepherd, MI, Brian (Lourdes) Cashen of Fort Myers, FL and Mark Cashen of Mt. Pleasant, MI. One of Tom's greatest joys in life was his four beautiful grandchildren, Brenden Cashen of Green Bay, WI, Hunter Cashen of San Antonio, TX, Seth and Brooke Cashen of Fort Myers, FL.

To say Tom loved the outdoors would be an understatement. He loved to hunt, fish, watch the birds and mow his lawn. He still cut his own wood one piece at a time for the wood stove. He would explain how many times each piece of wood would warm you… cutting it, hauling it, splitting it and burning it. The front porch was a favorite place where he and Janet enjoyed taking in all nature had to offer. Anyone that knew Tom will tell you he was one of hardest workers they ever met.

He is survived by his wife Janet, sons Craig, Gary, Brian and Mark; grandchildren, Brenden, Hunter, Seth and Brooke; brother, Fred (Joyce) Cashen; sister, Cathy (Roy) Jarman, and brother-in-laws, Eugene Ervans and Steve Hartley.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Alma Cashen; brothers, Leo Cashen, George Cashen; sisters, Theresa Corliss, Mary Jean Rodenbo, and Rosemary Hartley.
