Virginia was born August 1, 1927, in Isabella County, the daughter of Christopher and Marguerite (Graham) Torpey. She married Arthur Layfield on July 26, 1949, in Mt. Pleasant, where they resided their entire life and raised their family. Arthur preceded her in death in 1992. Virginia was a homemaker, always taking care of her family. She also worked for Central Michigan University and cooked for the priest at Sacred Heart Parish for many years. Virginia retired from Mt. Pleasant Regional Center after many years spent as a caregiver; she genuinely loved and cared for the residents she took care of. Virginia was devoted to God and Sacred Heart Parish; sharing her faith with her family and friends was most important in her life. She had many beautiful flower gardens and happily shared her goods from her vegetable gardens with family. Virginia will be remembered as having a beautiful heart and was always kind and loving to everyone. Most of all she leaves a legacy throughout generations that will remember her as an amazing grandmother and great-grandmother with many cherished memories and stories. Even in her final year, as her memory started to slip, her beautiful heart never changed. There are not enough words to describe Virginia Layfield, but anyone who was lucky enough to feel her love has been forever changed in the most beautiful ways.
