Fred A. Grewe, 89, of Gladwin, passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at New Hope Assisted Living.

Memorial services for Fred will be held on Saturday, October 24th at 3 p.m. from Clark Family Funeral Chapel with Tim Otteman officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1 p.m. until time of service at the funeral chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Amy Otteman Memorial Nursing Education Endowment at CMCH. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Fred was born on December 4, 1919 in Clare County, the son of Henry and Stella (Young) Grewe. He served in the United States Navy Construction Battalion (“Seabees”) during WWII and was stationed in the Philippines. Fred married Beatrice Mae Jennings on June 26, 1947. He owned Grewe Excavating Co. from 1947 until 1982 at which time it was sold to his eldest son. Fred was a former member of the Jaycees, Isabella County Fair Board and a recognized blood donor for the American Red Cross. He was inducted with a Humanitarian Award into the Mt. Pleasant High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001, was active with Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts and was an active member of the Operating Engineers. Fred was on the Board of Directors for the Community Memorial Stadium construction in 1965 and enjoyed hunting, painting, bowling, woodworking and in retirement continued to love operating heavy equipment.

Fred is survived by his children, Sally (Walter) Utterback of Indianapolis, Indiana, Sue (Gordon) Tengen of Mt. Pleasant, Sharon Heyse of Columbus, Ohio, Richard (Jane) Grewe of Traverse City, Gary (Barbara) Grewe of Mt. Pleasant, David (Mary Kay) Grewe of Traverse City and Thomas (Barbara) Grewe of Gladwin; 23 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and brother, Charles Grewe of Gladwin.

Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice in 1991; brothers, Vernon, Clarence, Alva and Herman; sisters, Victoria, Viola and Virginia; son-in-law, Thomas and grandchildren, Amy Otteman and Scott Heyse.




Memorials: Memorial contributions may be made to the Amy Otteman Memorial Nursing Education Endowment at CMCH. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.
