Obituary for Ada Jean Eifler

Ada Jean Eifler
Eifler, Ada Jean passed away on December 6th, 2017 at the Woodland Hospice House with family by her side.

Ada Jean was born on September 30, 1934, to Clark and Bernice Muma in South Haven, MI. They resided in Decatur, MI for nine years before moving to Allegan, then to Charlotte where her victory garden was judged best in town. After graduating from Charlotte High School, she attended Albion College where she caught Norm’s eye in the library and received her bachelor’s degree and teaching certificate. In September of 1956, she moved to Riverside, IL and taught the 5th grade while Norm finished dental school. They were married on December 29, 1956.

Dave was born in Chicago. Bob and Deb were born in Pennsylvania. After Norm’s service in the army, the family moved to Mt. Pleasant in 1960. Norm opened his dental practice and Kathy was born a few years later. Ada Jean remained home and managed the children and household.

In 1970, Ada Jean received a Master’s Degree in Education from Central Michigan University and was a substitute teacher in various schools in Mt. Pleasant.

She had a heroic capacity as she saved the lives of three children in a run-away car and also came to the aid of two children on a raft at a School Section Lake. Ada Jean was a Cub Scout Den Mother, as well as a Brownie Troop Leader. In Mt. Pleasant, she was appointed to a committee analyzing bus safety that made significant changes.

She was president for years on the Federated Garden Club Board assigned to billboards and logo signs, another group decided, along with the State Transportation Commission that a traffic light was needed on the corner of Pickard and Brown Streets. Locally, her group placed a light on the corner of Brown and Broadway, Ada Jean was active in the Audobon Club, Mt. Pleasant Federated Garden Club, Red Hats, and Child Study Club. She enjoyed those with a sense of humor and could give her friends a little jibe just for fun.

Her gardens were a love and a great sense of joy and accomplishment. Forty years of dogs from Spot, to Vicki and finally Freckles were always her constant companions.

She is survived by her loving husband of almost 61 years, Norm, sons, Dave (Lisa), Bob (Chris), Kathy (John) Demerath and Deb (Tim Edman), grandsons Jeff (Megan) Eifler, Matt (Courtney) Eifler, Jackie (Ben) Murray and Grace Demerath and also two great-granddaughters, Zoey and Madeleine. She also leaves behind twin brothers, John and Jim and four nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister-in-law, Barbara Munro and nephew, John Munro.
