Alson A.  Strong
STRONG, ALSON A., age 88, of Remus, passed away Friday, June 23, 2017 at the home of his son Robert and wife Kathy, where he had resided with loving care since the progression of dementia.
A Funeral Service for Alson will be held at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Kevin Smith officiating. A Luncheon will be held immediately following in the Reflections Reception Center. Burial will follow at Broomfield Township Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Monday, June 26 from 6-8 p.m. Visitation will continue the day of the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy may consider memorial donations in honor of Alson to be given to Hospice of Great Lakes Caring.
Alson was born June 10, 1929, to Roy and Veda Strong, the second of six children. A lifelong resident of the Remus area, he graduated from the local high school in 1947. Alson served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Wichita Falls, Texas. He served as a Mechanics Instructor of airplane engines, most notably the B-29's. It was during this time that Alson met the love of his life, Flora Wells. They were married in Oklahoma on December 28, 1952. Flora preceded him in death on June 8, 2008.
Alson worked as a tool and die maker for General Electric of Edmore, which later became Hitachi Magnetics Corporation. He retired in 1992 after 36 1/2 years of service. Alson enjoyed working with his hands and tools making precision items. His true passion was farming. He was most content on his tractor while working his farm and conserving the land.
Alson was a faithful member of the Mt. Pleasant First Church of Christ. He led by example to all of his family in his faithfulness. He served the church as a deacon for many years.
Alson cared deeply for his family as was evident that he was always there to care for and attend to anything that needed to be done. He never let anyone down. He had a great love for all those in his life. He deeply loved Flora and their children. He became a doting grandfather and later, great grandfather. His family was everything to him and they will never forget his love for them.
Surviving Alson are his three children, Nancy (Strong) McManus of Grand Rapids, Robert (Kathy) Strong of Remus, Larry (Elizabeth) Strong of Caledonia; his sisters Lavonne (Carl) Stamm of Belmont, Louise (Dennis) Henretty of Joshua Tree, CA; brother Paul Strong of Grand Rapids; five grandchildren Jason (Angela) Strong, Jessica Strong, Patrick McManus, Susan McManus, Ashley Strong; three great-grandchildren Emalee, Ella, and Eden Strong.
In addition to his parents and wife Flora of over 54 years, Alson was preceded in death by a daughter in infancy, Doris Louise, and a grandson at 19, Christopher McManus.
