Obituary for Earl Duane Backus

Earl Duane  Backus
Backus, Earl Duane “Short”, age 83, of Higgins Lake, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Monday, June 18, 2018, at Crawford Continuing Care Center in Grayling.

Funeral Services for Earl will be held at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Friday, June 22, 2018 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Gene Haymaker officiating. Interment will take place in Memorial Gardens Cemetery. A luncheon will immediately follow at the Reflections Reception Center. The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue the day of the service from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Earl was born on January 10, 1935 in Oil City, the son of Earl William Backus and Bonnie Bethel (Welch) Backus. Earl married Nancy Moose on August 20, 1955. After graduating from high school, he worked for 16 years as an auto mechanic in a Chevrolet Dealership. Earl then went to work for Unical in the oil fields as an oil field mechanic, but quickly moved up to management as a field supervisor. He loved to fish, hunt, tinker with old cars and visit with people.

Earl is survived by his wife, Nancy; children, Joseph (Selena) Backus of Mt. Pleasant, Gene Backus (Mary Antcliff) of Higgins Lake, James Backus of Shepherd, Jonathon Backus (Teresa Shores) of Higgins Lake and Jeffery (Kari) Backus of Roscommon; grandchildren, Duane, Nick, Joey, James, Brandi, Amie, Chris, Beth, Chantel, Zane, Logan and Brice; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Judy Backus-Flint of Blanchard, and his dog, “Chiquita”.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, William and Dale Backus
