Obituary for Edwina Jane Burgess

BURGESS, EDWINA JANE, age 91, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at Maplewood Assisted Living.

A graveside committal service will take place Saturday, July 21 at 2 p.m. at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. A Memorial Service will follow at 2:45 p.m. at Maranatha Baptist Church, with Pastor Gene Haymaker officiating. A luncheon will immediately follow in the fellowship hall of the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Maranatha Baptist Church. Envelopes will be available at the church.

Edwina was born February 9, 1927, in Alto, Michigan to Murl and Edna (Mishler) Hostetler. She graduated as Salutatorian from Freeport High with the class of 1945. Edwina married Franklin D. Burgess December 3, 1949, in Grand Rapids. She was raised Mennonite and grew up on the family farm with her five brothers and sister learning to farm at an early age. Every spring as a little girl, her father put her in charge of 500 baby chicks to raise. It was at home she learned cooking, canning, and crocheting. She was also taught to sing and play the piano. Edwina did many jobs in her career. She spent over 40 years as a date entry operator and retired from Lansing Board of Water and Light. In her early years, Edwina worked for the Defense Logistic Support Agency in Battle Creek. She was a reconnaissance bomber electrician in Grand Rapids during the Korean War, worked for S. H. Camp CO in Jackson in the shipping and handling department, and Central Michigan Community Hospital.

Edwina is survived by her husband Franklin D. Burgess of Mt. Pleasant; son Samuel F. Burgess (Yaochin Chen) of Birmingham; son-in-law Clyde Dosenberry of Mt. Pleasant; granddaughter Sara Dosenberry of Mt. Pleasant; grandson Samuel James Burgess of Rockford; sister Barbara Ketchum of Mason; 2 sisters-in-law Elsie Hostetler and Jerilee Hostetler both of Hastings; many nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews.

Edwina was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Pamela Rae Dosenberry on August 17,2015; and her five brothers Lawrence, Orlo, Howard, Jim, and Jerry Hostetler.
