Obituary for Gaylord Larned Courter

Courter, Gaylord Larned age 90, of Mt. Pleasant passed away peacefully, Saturday, June 2, 2018.

Funeral Services for Gaylord will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Tuesday, June 5, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Dana Hendershot officiating. A Luncheon will immediately follow at the church. Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Monday, June 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church the day of the service from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Christmas Outreach. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel and Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Gaylord was born on December 8, 1927, in Ionia, MI, the son of Paul and Mary (Goodrich) Courter. Gaylord proudly served his country in the Coast Guard during WWII and the Navy during the Korean War. He married Marilyn Hill on July 16, 1949, in Trufant, MI. Gaylord received his Bachelor's in Banking from the University of Wisconsin. He started in banking as a bank examiner for the State of Michigan. In 1956 he moved to Mt. Pleasant and served many roles throughout his banking career. He retired as the President of American Security Bank in 1982. Gaylord taught banking classes at Central Michigan University and later transferred into the development office at Central, retiring in 1992.

Gaylord was dedicated to the Mt. Pleasant community, serving as Chairman of the Board at Central Michigan Community Hospital for several years, and was involved with the Toast Masters and Kiwanis. He was a founding member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and Christmas Outreach. He was instrumental in the building of the Community Memorial Stadium which serves both Sacred Heart Academy and the Mt. Pleasant Public Schools. Gaylord loved to bird hunt, fish, and travel the world.

Gaylord is survived by his children, Gregory (Kay) Courter of Battle Creek and Teresa (Tim) Coscarelly of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Stephanie Coscarelly, Nicholas Coscarelly, both of Mt. Pleasant, Tracy (Rob) Burdick of Lansing, and Kelly Eis of Battle Creek; 2 older brothers, Bernard (Marcella) Courter and Bryce Courter; and 1 niece and 4 nephews.

Gaylord was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marilyn in 2015 and parents.
