Gerald “Chum” Schafer, 75, of Rosebush passed away on Thursday, August 10, 2006 at his home.

Funeral Mass for Chum will be held on Sunday, August 13th at 2 p.m. from St. Henry’s Catholic Church with Father Don Henkes and Lorraine McGuiness officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Henry’s Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 11th from 7-9 p.m. and on Saturday, August 12th from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. at Clark Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Michigan. Envelopes will be available at the church and the funeral chapel.

Chum was born on August 27, 1930 in Beal City, the son of Andrew and Rose Schafer. He served in the United States Marines from 1950 until 1952. Chum married Patricia Pety on September 1, 1956 in Mt. Pleasant. He retired in 1993 from the maintenance department at Mt. Pleasant Regional Center after 29 years of service. Chum was an avid guitarist playing in the bands, Tex Schafer Circle X Cowboys and Jerry Schafer and the Jacks and Jills. He enjoyed music, his family, hunting, playing cards and camping. Chum was a member of the Clare Moose Lodge, Clare Eagles, St. Henry’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus in Beal City.

Chum is survived by his wife, Patricia; children, Michael (Kiyomi) Schafer of Midland, Dr. Brian (Dr. Christine) Schafer of Ada, Jill Schafer of Tucson, AZ and Jennifer (Ted) Hess of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren, Gwen, Tiffany, Brittany, Brian, Stason, Andrew, Matthew, Sydnie, Justin, Amanda and Kasandra; one great-grandson, Sam; brother, Lee (Roque) Schafer of Mt. Pleasant and sister-in-law, Carol Schafer of Weidman.

Chum was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers, Leroy, Harold “Tex”, Lavern, Earl and Leon.
