Obituary for Helen Johnson

Helen  Johnson
Helen Johnson, 93, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away at her home Thursday, January 12, 2017 surrounded by her daughters. A Funeral Mass for Helen will be held Monday, January 16, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Loren Kalinowski officiating. A Luncheon will immediately follow at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall. Rite of Committal will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 15, from 4-8 p.m. at Clark Family Funeral Chapel. A Vigil Service will take place Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will also continue at the church on Monday one hour prior to the funeral service. Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Foundation or McLaren Hospice Bay Region.

Helen was born January 20, 1923 in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of Alida (Claus) and Julius Windel. She was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy and a faithful lifelong parishioner at Sacred Heart Parish. Helen married Norman Johnson on June 15, 1944, in Mt. Pleasant.

Being the wife of a dairy farmer she helped with the never-ending tasks on the farm, as well as getting involved with 4-H, Farm Bureau, and PTA. She enjoyed her work as a Receptionist in the Counseling Office at Central Michigan University from 1968 to 1983.

Helen enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, playing card games, and traveling with Norman. She brought great joy to her family with her wonderful cooking and Grandma’s sleepovers. Helen will always be remembered for her warm smile, her kindness, her patience, and her welcoming heart.

Helen is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Connie (Bob) Heintz, Kay (Bill) Newberry, both of DeWitt, Sally (Ed) Gall of Saline, Debbie (Tom) Pavlak of DeWitt, and Carole (Dick) Forton of Caledonia; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 4 sisters, Alice D’Hulster of Harper Woods, Laura Pohl, Leona Halfmann, both of Mt. Pleasant, Rose Robinson of Lansing, brother-in-law Vernon (Sharon) Halfmann, and many nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband Norman, her sister Annie, and her parents.
