Obituary for Jean Loret Mayhew (Binkley)

Jean Loret Mayhew (Binkley)
Jean Loret Binkley Mayhew – 7/29/1919 to 4/6/2018. Born in Alma, Michigan to Paul and Mary Binkley, wife of Lavern (Bernie) Mayhew (deceased) and M. Walter Maxwell (deceased). She is survived by two children; David E. Mayhew of Paris, France, and Rebecca (Becky) L. Mayhew of Surprise, AZ, and three grandchildren; Aimee Pischea of Ionia, Michigan, Jason Mayhew of East Lansing, Michigan, and Joshua Mayhew of Franklin, Michigan. Jean had five great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Madeline, Margaret, Mackenzie and Noah. Jean passed of natural causes in Mt. Pleasant, MI.

Jean had been before the public since she was 4 years old, and educated young people for the majority of her life. She obtained a Bachelors degree from Michigan State University in 1941 in Speech, Dramatics and Radio Dramatic Production. Her life was then dedicated to teaching drama and speech at High School and Collegiate levels. She went on to obtain a Masters degree and ABD from The University of Michigan. Jean taught Speech and Drama for 30 years at Central Michigan University, where she touched 36,000 students through her innovative Television lectures. Her involvement with the CMU community is far too extensive to list here, but of significance is that she chaired almost every committee (including the Athletic committee, the campus beautification committee (for 8 years) and Academic Senate). During her time at Central she also was President of the Michigan Speech Association, and judged numerous Speech contests throughout Michigan.

Jean was very involved within the local community where she helped get Art Reach of Mid Michigan off the ground in the early 80’s. She was the first woman President of the Board of Directors of the Mt. Pleasant Country Club and spent many years of volunteer work at the local hospital.

She will be cremated and at her wishes, no services will be held. Those who wish to remember her may send a contribution to the Jean Mayhew Interdisciplinary Language Arts Scholarship at Central Michigan University.
