Obituary for Mary Sophia Binkowski

Mary Sophia Binkowski
BINKOWSKI, MARY SOPHIA, age 89, of Edmond, OK, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, journeyed to her final home on January 23, 2017. Mary was born in Kutno, Poland, on August 15, 1927, the daughter of Josef and Francis (Pienkowski) Binkowski. Mary’s faith sustained her as she grew up in Poland and Germany during WWII. She met and fell in love with Stanley Binkowski, also of Poland, in Hohenhotle, Germany, where he was interned and worked. Mary and Stan were married on January 4, 1948, in Reckenfeld, Germany. They immigrated to Alma, MI, after the war ended. In 1965, Mary and Stan purchased Paul’s Famous Restaurant, which they renamed Stanley’s Famous Restaurant. At the restaurant Mary was known for her delicious cream pies, the sour cream raisin pie being a favorite request. The restaurant was a popular gathering space and she often asked strangers to sit together, believing in and encouraging God’s human family. Mary was a prayerful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church for 55 years, attending Mass daily, praying the Rosary, and bringing Eucharist weekly to the shut-ins of the parish. She enjoyed watching EWTN. Mary was an avid gardener. She stayed active exercising at Wellness Central, loved dancing with her husband Stan, listening to music, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary loved people and was quick to share a greeting and smile, even with strangers.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 2, with Fr. Don Henkes officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of Service. Rite of Committal will follow in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wishes of the family. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel and the church.

Mary is survived by her children Mary (Russel) Heinz of Gowen, Henry (Susan) Binkowski of Oklahoma City, Theresa Binkowski and Julie Sunderman, both of Shepherd; grandchildren Kyle (Megan), Shelby (Tory) Thrush, Karli Binkowski, Madison (Logan) Magill, Evan Welch, Elly Sunderman, Aslan Binkowski; great-grandchildren Lillian Franciszka and Kinsley Thrush; nieces and nephews; sisters Irene (Joe) Tondera and Sophie (Jerry) Strygulec, and brother Jerry (Sue) Dalek.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Stanley Binkowski on December 8, 2016, her parents and sister Leokadyja LInski.
