Obituary for Matthew James Echelberger

Matthew James  Echelberger
ECHELBERGER, MATTHEW JAMES, age 55, of Mt. Pleasant, MI, died peacefully at home on Thursday, January 12, 2017, after a courageous battle with leukemia. Matthew was born November 12, 1961, in Cadillac, MI, to James D. and Pauline (Garrow) Echelberger. He graduated from Traverse City St. Francis High School and received his BA and MA from Central Michigan University and an MFA in Poetry from Vermont College. Matthew had been an instructor in the Department of English Language and Literature at CMU since 1988. He was also a writer, and his poems have been published in numerous literary journals.

He leaves behind to mourn his passing his wife, Andrea; children Leah (Michael) Hazen and Logan Echelberger; step-children Anthony Taylor and Alexandra Marin; and cherished grandchild, Arabella Marin. He is also survived by his father Jim Echelberger; brother Mark Echelberger; sisters Lisa Aldrich and Angie (Greg) Schroeder; nieces and nephews; brothers and sisters-in-law; parents-in-law; and a host of friends and former students, all of whom he cherished. He was preceded in death by his mother, Pauline.

A Memorial Service for Matthew will be held at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, January 17, at 2 p.m. with Benjamen Evers officiating. A luncheon will follow in the Reflections Reception Center. Visitation will be held at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Monday, January 16, from 5-9 p.m. and Tuesday, January 17, from 12 noon until the time of Service. In accordance with Matt’s wishes, his remains will be cremated and will be scattered in the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes National Lakeshore at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to support the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center Leukemia Program.
