Obituary for Melvyn Myron Jaffa

Melvyn Myron  Jaffa
July 3, 1941 – April 15, 2018

Melvyn Myron Jaffa, Ph.D., was Professor Emeritus at Central Michigan University. He taught in the Psychology Department and did research there for 41 years. He graduated from the prestigious Brooklyn Technical High School, received his B.A. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and was awarded a doctorate by Columbia University. Mel came to CMU in 1973 from Adelphi University where he was an assistant professor. His Ph.D. was from Columbia where he was a student of William McGuire, a social psychologist best known for his work on persuasion. He had letters of recommendation from three other famous psychologists, Stanley Schachter, Philip Zimbardo, and Nathan Kogan. Mel had a passion for research, involved countless undergraduate students in his lab, and continued to run his lab after he retired in December 2016, doing active research with numerous published articles. Mel was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Nathan and Esther (Garfield) Jaffa.

He is survived by his brother, David Jaffa, his sister-in-law, Helene Jaffa, and two nephews, Michael (Wendy) Jaffa and Eric Jaffa and a great nephew and niece.

He will be interred at Hillside Memorial Park in Los Angeles, California.Memorial donations can be made to the Central Michigan University Psychology Department, Sloan 101, Mt Pleasant, MI 48859.
